+ DOUG TURNER |
I began my woodworking career as a student at The Atlanta College of Art, making canvas stretchers and picture frames for myself and other students. I made the transition to furniture after a visit to my uncle, a professional woodworker in New Jersey. He told me to stop playing around in my cousin's basement (the location of my first shop) and get a job at a good shop where I could really learn. And so I did.
It was trial by fire - total immersion learning. Every day I learned some new technique - mostly by doing it wrong first. It worked however, and I found myself able to take on increasingly complex jobs. I studied veneering, bent lamination, joinery and other techniques as I used them.
Since those days at my first shop, I have worked with many talented designers, architects and craftsmen, and have taught a few woodworking classes at Highland Hardware here in Atlanta. My continued focus has been on custom residential and office furniture.
